Mod Tools Are Coming To Call of Duty: Black Ops

Via Big Download and Blue’s News comes the news that the Modding Ghetto gamers were forced into for Modern Warfare 2 is ending in a big way with the upcoming release of Call of Duty: Black Ops. Eschewing the inexplicable behavior we’ve seen some from some other devs we could mention, it seems developers Treyarch decided to respond to the ton of questions hopeful modders were posting with a direct, (mostly) unambiguous answer right on the BlackOps forum:
We plan to open the game up for modding sometime post-launch.”
That is, of course, excellent news. There’s just one catch:
We do not know yet to what extent you will be able to mod the game.
Queue a million people “awwwwww”ing. But, why is… those things?
There are some purely technical issues related to engine and internal tool enhancements that do not easily fit the modtools paradigm. We have looked at it close enough to see that it is non-trivial and we will have to pick it up again post-launch.
Dammit. I’m so hopeful and yet pre-disappointed I don’t know how to feel. The only thing that can save me is some finely-worded corporate boilerplate:
“Right now we are completely focused on finishing the game.”
Whew. All better. But seriously, this is pretty fantastic news, even if a release date for the tools isn’t confirmed. Modders are sometimes treated like real players, but more often they’re simply regarded as well-meaning, but annoying tinkerers who really ought to shut it, and play the game like god intended. It’s nice to know that Treyarch is taking them, and the tools, seriously.
