Two mod teams have been concurrently working on recreating Grand Theft Auto: Vice City using Grand Theft Auto IV’s engine. Although there is generally a sense of fellowship among modders, one can’t help but wonder if some rivalry exists between these two teams. Who will finish their mod first? Which will be more polished? It’s the Space Race all over again. Just… less historically important.
Both teams have presented videos of their works-in-progress.
The Vice City RAGE team offers this short video that shows off their recreation of Vice City in the GTA4 engine, complete with the original textures:
The Vice IV team presents this NSFW 18-minute video, showcasing cutscenes and gameplay (gameplay starts about 9 minutes in). Many assets are absent, resulting in some humorous floating characters, but it’s a solid proof-of-concept.
Although the RAGE Team’s video is more polished, the Vice IV team already has a beta available for download over at their website, so this is still a tight race.
